Minneapolis is grappling with a surge in homicides, surpassing last year’s total and igniting concerns about public safety. As of December 2024, the city has recorded 55 homicides, exceeding the 53 reported at this time last year.
This uptick follows a brief decline in 2023, when homicides fell to 72 from a peak of 102 in 2022.

Community advocates emphasize the need to tackle underlying issues such as homelessness and addiction to effectively curb violence. Muhammad Abdul-Ahad of T.O.U.C.H Outreach highlighted the necessity for more treatment facilities and housing programs to address these root causes.
The Minneapolis Police Department is also confronting challenges, including staffing shortages and the proliferation of illegal drugs and firearms, which complicate efforts to reduce violent crime.
