ST. PAUL, Minn. — Early risers in St. Paul’s Payne-Phalen neighborhood were jolted awake Sunday morning by gunfire outside an ARCO gas station on Larpenteur Avenue East, just off 35E.

Around 7 a.m., police responded to reports of a shooting and discovered one man with a gunshot wound to his back near the gas station. A second individual was located inside a vehicle about a block away, also injured by gunfire.

According to St. Paul Police, the shooter was an employee of the gas station, with the shots fired during what authorities described as an “altercation.” Initial reports suggest both victims were wounded in the same incident.

The injuries sustained by both individuals are believed to be non-life-threatening, though the chaos rattled the quiet morning.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities are piecing together what led to this violent confrontation in an otherwise routine part of town.
