A late-night traffic stop in St. Paul escalated into a dangerous pursuit and gunfire on Monday. Around 11 p.m., a driver stopped near Central Avenue and Chatsworth Street for a traffic violation fled the scene, according to the St. Paul Police Department.

During the chase, the suspect allegedly fired multiple shots at an officer, shattering the vehicle’s rear window. Police reported that the officer did not return fire. The pursuit ended when the driver crashed into a parked car on Fuller Avenue. The suspect attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended.

An AR-15-style rifle was found in the vehicle, and the driver was taken to Regions Hospital before being booked into the Ramsey County Adult Detention Center. No injuries were reported, and nearby homes showed no signs of damage from the shooting.

The driver remains unnamed, and charges are pending as of Tuesday morning. The nature of the initial traffic violation has not been disclosed.
