Adnan Abdullahi Abdi, a St. Paul man who fatally shot his friend in the head as part of a prank, has been sentenced to probation and home arrest.

Abdi received a stayed four-year prison sentence, meaning he will serve five years on probation instead. Additionally, he will spend 90 days under home detention with electronic monitoring, receiving credit for four days already served.

The incident occurred in April 2024 when Abdi called police, initially claiming his 19-year-old friend, Omar Noor Nunow, had shot himself. Authorities first treated the case as a suicide but later found inconsistencies in Abdi’s story.

According to a criminal complaint, Abdi later admitted he had planned to “scare” Nunow when he returned from the bathroom. Unaware that a round was in the chamber, Abdi pointed a gun at Nunow’s head, said “Freeze,” and pulled the trigger, killing him.

Abdi pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in December.
