Rickey Henderson, Major League Baseball’s all-time stolen base leader and one of the sport’s most electrifying players, has died at the age of 65.
TMZ reported that Henderson passed away Friday in the Oakland, California area following a battle with pneumonia.
Over a remarkable 25-year career, Henderson redefined the art of baserunning, stealing an MLB-record 1,406 bases—a mark many believe will never be broken. His dynamic play earned him 10 All-Star selections, a Gold Glove, three Silver Slugger Awards, and the 1990 American League MVP.
Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009 with an overwhelming 94.8% of the vote, Henderson was as memorable for his unique charisma as he was for his unparalleled skill. Known for his signature headfirst slides, swagger, and iconic phrases, he left an indelible mark on the game.
“Rickey was simply the greatest leadoff hitter of all time,” said a statement from MLB. “His speed, skill, and personality changed the game forever.”
