President Donald Trump has signed an executive order ending federal support for gender transitions for individuals under 19. The order directs federally-run insurance programs, like TRICARE and Medicaid, to exclude coverage for gender-affirming care and calls for the Department of Justice to oppose these practices through litigation and legislation.
Labeling gender-affirming care as “destructive” and “life-altering,” the order dismisses guidelines from major medical associations, including the American Medical Association, which support such care. Critics argue the order politicizes medical decisions, leaving families and providers uncertain about future access to necessary treatments.
The order is expected to face legal challenges, as advocates argue it strips transgender youth and their families of the freedom to make informed healthcare decisions.
