Minnesota State Workers Return to Smaller Offices

Starting June 1, many Minnesota state workers will begin returning to their offices. Most of them have been working from home since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

But when they return, they may find their office space is smaller than before. Many departments reduced their office sizes or gave up space during the pandemic to save money.

Now that workers are coming back part-time, some are learning there aren’t enough desks for everyone. This has led to frustration.

One employee said, “I came in and didn’t even have a place to sit.”

The state says it’s working on a solution. Some departments are using a “hoteling” system, where workers reserve a desk before coming in. Others are rotating schedules to make sure there’s enough room.

Union leaders are worried. “We’re not against returning to work,” one said. “But we want to make sure it’s done right.”

Governor Tim Walz said returning to in-person work is important for collaboration and service. He also said the state will listen to worker concerns.

The plan is for workers to come in two days a week. The rest of the time they can still work from home.

More changes may come as the state learns what works best.
