Thousands Gather in St. Peter’s Square to Pray for Ailing Pope Francis

VATICAN CITY — Thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square on Monday night to pray for Pope Francis, who remains in critical condition with pneumonia. Despite a slight improvement, the 88-year-old pontiff has spent 11 days in Rome’s Gemelli hospital, where doctors continue to monitor his fragile health.

Led by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, a solemn 45-minute rosary vigil drew nearly 4,000 attendees. Many expressed sorrow for Francis’ suffering while reflecting on his lasting impact on the Catholic Church. “To see him suffer hurts, but we also pray in thanksgiving for what he has done,” said Robert Pietro, a Romanian seminarian.

Francis, who lost part of a lung in his youth, has struggled with respiratory issues in recent years. Though doctors report no additional crises since Saturday, his condition remains uncertain.

The scene in St. Peter’s Square evoked memories of past vigils for popes in declining health. Pope John Paul II, beloved for his global outreach, passed away on April 2, 2005. His successor, Pope Benedict XVI, who resigned in 2013, died on December 31, 2022.

For now, the faithful continue to pray, hoping that Pope Francis, known for his messages of inclusion, environmental stewardship, and advocacy for the marginalized, will recover.
