Minneapolis residents were forced out of their homes early Thursday morning after a water main break flooded streets and threatened to turn the area into an icy mess.
Fire crews responded to a fire alarm at 3:30 a.m. at an apartment building above TERZO, an Italian restaurant on 2223 50th St. W. Instead of flames, they found water gushing from the restaurant, rapidly flooding the street.
It took emergency crews four hours to shut off the water main, finally stopping the flow by 7:30 a.m. In the meantime, three adult residents were evacuated from the building, and homes along Oliver Avenue South were warned to move their vehicles before freezing temperatures turned them into ice-locked statues.
No injuries were reported, but the restaurant and surrounding businesses could face significant water damage. Officials have yet to determine the cause of the break.
